Effective Skincare Tips for Teens & Tweens
Teen skin is a different beast to adult skin - and it comes with its own set of rules. Puberty brings a wave of changes that can leave skin oilier, more reactive, and more prone to breakouts than you're used to. Here's what's actually going on, and the simple habits that make the biggest difference.
What's changing in your skin
Skin renews itself constantly, but during the teenage years that process shifts gear. Teen skin is tougher and more elastic than a child's, and it bounces back fast - but hormonal changes also ramp up oil (sebum) production. That extra oil mixes with sweat, dirt and everyday grime, and can clog pores before you even notice. The result: more breakouts, more often.
Why a simple routine matters
The teenage years are actually the best time to build good skincare habits, since your skin is already going through so much change. A consistent routine now helps keep breakouts under control and can save you from dealing with acne scarring later.
The good news is that a good routine doesn't need to be complicated. Pick products suited to your skin type, use them consistently, and resist the urge to pile on extras - too many products (or the wrong ones) can irritate skin and make it harder to stick with the routine long-term.
9 skincare tips every teen and tween should know
- Cleanse properly, twice a day. Use a cleanser suited to your skin type - soap-free formulas are kinder to your skin barrier. Stick to lukewarm water, skip the scrubbing, and use light circular motions with a gentle exfoliating cloth, working outward from the T-zone to cover your forehead, nose, cheeks and neck.
- Tone it down. A gentle, natural toner sweeps away any leftover dirt or make-up and preps skin for the next step.
- Treat breakouts early. A water-based gel serum like SkinKarma, with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, hydrates while calming existing acne.
- Don't skip moisturiser. Moisturising twice daily keeps skin plump and hydrated and helps prevent premature fine lines. A lightweight, niacinamide-based formula like HydraSilk hydrates without clogging pores.
- Wear sunscreen, every day. A broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF protects against sun damage - back it up with a hat and covered-up skin when you're outdoors for longer.
- Hands off your face. Picking or squeezing spots spreads bacteria and makes breakouts worse. Washing your hands before touching your face or applying makeup helps too.
- Keep your tools clean. Wash makeup brushes and applicators regularly, don't share them, and always remove makeup before bed - your skin needs to breathe and repair itself overnight.
- Eat well and hydrate. A balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, plus lots of water, supports skin from the inside out.
- Stay active. Keeping your body healthy helps your skin function the way it should.
